When women reach out to me about booking a boudoir session, one question often comes up:
“Why is there such a big difference in photographers?”
Some photographers offer sessions for a few hundred dollars and give you a handful of digitals. Others provide a full luxury experience and custom artwork.
To someone who has never done boudoir before, it can be confusing.
And honestly… I understand that confusion.
Because years ago, I made the same mistake many women make when choosing a photographer.

My First Boudoir Experience
Years ago, I wanted to surprise my husband with boudoir photos for our first anniversary.
At the time I was already a photographer, but not a boudoir photographer, so I didn’t fully understand what went into the experience.
Instead of hiring the photographer whose work I truly loved, I chose a cheaper photographer because I thought it would still turn out fine.
Her sessions were around $500 and included about ten digital images. I thought, how bad could it be?
The session was advertised with dirt bikes and a dirt bike track, which sounded really fun and unique.
But when I arrived…
There were no dirt bikes.
Instead, there was a 1990s red Mustang.
Not exactly the vision I had in mind, but I tried to go with the flow.
Unfortunately, things continued to go downhill from there.
The session was done in the middle of the day with full sunlight blasting into my eyes, which meant I was squinting through most of the shoot. There was no professional hair and makeup offered, and I didn’t really know how to prepare for a boudoir session at the time.
I had brought an entire wardrobe of lingerie that I loved, but the photographer chose the outfits for me instead of letting me feel comfortable and confident in what I had brought.
By the end of the session, I already knew something was wrong.
I left feeling disappointed.

Trying to Fix the Experience
When I got home, I told my husband what had happened because I knew I wasn’t going to be happy with the photos.
So we decided to try something ourselves.
I asked him to go with me to my parents’ house, set up my camera, and have him take photos of me while I posed myself.
And you know what?
I actually liked those photos better than the ones from the session I had paid for.
But the situation still wasn’t over.
Months went by, and I still hadn’t received the digital images I had been promised.
After finally reaching out and asking what was going on, the photographer responded and told me she had moved out of state.
No communication.
No follow up.
No accountability.
Just gone.
That experience taught me a lesson I will never forget.
Don’t Put Your Confidence in the Wrong Hands
Boudoir photography is different from most other types of photography.
It’s personal.
It’s vulnerable.
And the photographer you choose plays a huge role in how you see yourself afterward.
A good boudoir photographer doesn’t just take photos.
They help guide you through an experience that can completely change the way you see your body and your confidence.
But the wrong photographer can leave you feeling discouraged or insecure.
That’s why choosing the right professional matters so much.

Red Flags to Watch for When Hiring a Photographer
If you’re searching for a boudoir photographer in Ohio (or anywhere), here are a few things I always encourage women to look for.
1. Professionalism
A professional photographer should communicate clearly, deliver images on time, and run their business with organization and respect for their clients.
2. Privacy and Consent
Boudoir images are deeply personal.
A photographer should never share a client’s photos without explicit written consent. Your privacy should always be respected.
3. Respect for Your Body
A photographer should never make negative comments about your body.
Their role is to help you feel empowered, confident, and beautiful.
4. Accountability
If something goes wrong, a professional takes responsibility and works to fix it.
If someone constantly blames others or avoids accountability, that’s a red flag.
5. Experience Matters
Professional boudoir photographers provide an entire experience, not just a handful of digital files.
That often includes guidance on preparation, posing, professional lighting, editing, and heirloom-quality products that preserve your images for years to come.
Boudoir Should Be a Transformational Experience
Yes, some photographers cost more than others.
But when you invest in an experienced boudoir photographer, you are investing in far more than just photos.
You’re investing in:
• A safe and comfortable environment
• Professional posing guidance
• Expert lighting and editing
• A confidence-building experience
• Artwork that will last a lifetime
A great boudoir session should leave you feeling stronger, more confident, and proud of the woman you are.
And that is exactly the experience I strive to create for every woman who walks into my studio.
